Hana SATO
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Kyoto's Oharano district, café Hana SATO sits alongside a poultry farm, serving oyakodon, omurice, and rich custard puddings made with farm-fresh eggs and Buri Shamo chicken in a relaxed setting shared with Shiba Inu.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Spreading along the foot of Kyoto's western mountains, the Oharano area is home to Hana SATO, a relaxed café attached directly to a poultry farm. Many visitors pause here while exploring nearby historic stops such as Jurin-ji, Yoshimine-dera, and Oharano Shrine, sitting down for a meal or tea on grounds that also feature an on-site farm shop.
The house specialty at lunchtime is the oyakodon, prepared with Buri Shamo gamecock. The firm chew and deep savor of the chicken are enveloped in softly cooked egg over dashi-seasoned rice, coming together in a hearty, satisfying bowl. The rest of the midday lineup focuses on unpretentious chicken and egg staples, including the Hana Lunch, which pairs miso-marinated chicken with dashi-rolled omelet, and classic ketchup-glazed omurice.
The custard pudding is a natural post-meal choice that showcases the farm's fresh eggs with minimal distraction. It stands firmly on its own when scooped yet melts smoothly on the tongue, delivering the dense, concentrated richness of fresh yolk. Paired with freshly brewed coffee or a cappuccino, it makes an ideal midday pause after a morning of walking.
A Shiba Inu breeding kennel also operates on the grounds, giving the café the unique charm of friendly dogs resting out in the yard and around the entrance. Before leaving, guests can purchase freshly collected eggs and cuts of chicken from the farm counter. Surrounded by the peaceful air of the Nishiyama foothills, it offers an unhurried setting to enjoy rustic egg dishes and sweets.
